Brother Laser Printer: A Review of the Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printer

Posted by Filed Under Personal Laser Printer with No Comments

I recently purchased the Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printer. Luckily, I wasn’t wrong with doing so. I have achieved very satisfactory prints out of this reliable machine. But I also want to share with you the great features of this printer, so pay close attention to my review.

Design

The printer is very plain with a light and dark gray combination of colors which makes it good for weathering as damages, dust, and old age don’t show much on these colors. It’s a very simple device with no frills and no add-ons. The dimensions of the printer are 14.5″ x 14.2″ x 6.7″ and the unit weighs 15 pounds. It’s easy enough to place on any shelf, desktop, and tabletop.

It has no display, and it’s basically an ordinary printer which you connect to the PC using a USB cable. It’s not compatible with a network because it doesn’t have networking cables or connectivity, but that’s not a problem for me because I only use one computer for business use. If you’re looking for a printer that you can share, then this model isn’t for you.

Printing and Other Functions

This Brother laser printer is what it is – it’s only a laser printer. But if you ask me, I think it does a great job even if that’s all it can do. The printer can produce up to 23 pages per minute and it has a resolution of 2400×600 dpi, a higher value compared to many other brands or models of laser printers. The duty cycle of this printer is 10,000 pages, also higher than other brands or models, which means that you can print more documents in this printer in a month as compared to other models. The device has a standard memory of 8 MB for printing data which allows you to keep a lot of documents pending for printing.

There are two types of paper feeders of this printer: the paper tray and the manual feeder. The paper tray can carry paper sizes of letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6, B5, and B6; while the manual feeder can carry paper sizes of letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, envelopes, and custom sizes. The printout capacity of the paper tray is up to 100 sheets, so you can leave your printer continuously producing output while you’re doing other more important activities.

Other Features

The printer has a toner saver mode which allows you to save more ink and reduce costs – a feature which I think is not utilized properly by other users. I have read a lot of comments about the toner being too wasteful which is definitely not true for me. I think this printer uses ink just right as long as I’m in the toner saver mode. It’s also Energy Star qualified so I’m not wasting ink nor energy when using this printer. The only thing is that it produces a printing sound level of 51 decibels, quite noisy for such a small machine. But apart from that, I think it’s perfectly fine.

Conclusion

I have experienced the first time use of a firsthand Brother laser printer, and I can say I am very satisfied with it. It can definitely compete with other brands like HP and Canon. It’s a very good device and I wouldn’t trade it for any other model. So if you’re looking for a good laser printer that’s affordable and very functional, the best recommendation I can give you is the Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printer.

Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printer – Affordable, Reliable Quality

Posted by Filed Under Personal Laser Printer with No Comments

If you are looking for a new laser printer and want to find a good quality but affordable monochrome laser printer, you will want to check out the Brother HL-2140. I bought the HL-2140 about six months ago and I’ve been using it regularly since then. I use the printer mainly for archiving documents and for desktop publishing projects. I have put the Brother HL-2140 to the test over these past six months and it has performed reliably and well.

I selected a monochrome laser printer based on my home office printing needs. I have an ink jet printer for those rare occasions when I need a print with color but for my regular daily office tasks I use a black and white (or monochrome) laser printer. I have been using an older HP Laser Jet 4M for the last decade but it recently had a part go bad and it turns out it is cheaper for me to buy a new printer than to repair the old one. So I went shopping online and discovered the Brother HL-2140. After doing some detective work on the printer, I decided to buy it.

The printer was easy to set up and begin using. From sealed package to first test copy, only 30 minutes had elapsed. The instructions and the CD-ROM software were simple and easy to comprehend.

The HL-2140 printer doesn’t take up much desktop area measuring 14.5 x 6.7 x 14.2 inches (W x H x D) and it weighs 15 pounds. It is mostly made of plastic and while it is fairly firm, I would recommend opening the trays and other printer openings carefully as rough handling may result in breaking of some plastic parts. It’s not made for rugged handling.

This Brother laser printer is fast (prints up to 23 pages per minute) and the paper cassette tray holds enough sheets (up to 250) to keep you ready to print at the click of a mouse. I find the laser printer to be much more economical to use than an ink jet and since I don’t need it for color prints, this Brother monochrome laser printer suits my printing needs very well.

The starter toner cartridge seemed to run out of toner quickly but this is par for the course for consumer printers. I found information online on how to extend the toner cartridge’s capacity and now, hundreds of sheets later, I am still using the original starter toner cartridge.

I paid $80 for the printer during a summer promotion. It can be found online for around $100, at the time of this writing.

I am happy with the Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer. Brother is a well-respected company and I have previously owned some of their other products, each of which gave many years of economical, reliable service in my home office. I am equally pleased with the performance of this printer. I recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, reliable quality monochrome laser printer.

See the Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer review for more complete details, including information on how to extend the toner printing capacity of the original cartridge that comes with the printer.

Enterprise laser Vs Personal Printer-is there a difference?

Posted by Filed Under Personal Laser Printer with No Comments

If you are in the business should you a business laser printer. Here’s why …

    1) Printing volume-A typical business laser printer can comfortably handle an average of 1000 pages a week, but a personal laser printer is sufficiently up to an average of 200 pages a week.

Volumes average Print affect printing speeds required and so the quality of the build and the components used by the printer designers. a personal laser printer for low end can print up to eight pages per minute (ppm). However, a company laser printer go up to 24 pages per minute.

    2) Paper handling-of course, it is related to how much printing machine is likely to do.A personal printer can typically hold up to 200 sheets of letter size paper. an enterprise laser printer needed to keep far more sheets must be effectively-you do not want to waste time refilling the paper trays.

With an enterprise laser printer, 750 sheets and forward is likely figures for tray capacity. And the ability to manage other sizes of paper, envelopes, self-adhesive labels and even transparencies probably also will be available.

Another important consideration is whether you want to print on both sides of a sheet of paper-known as duplex printing. This function is usually only available with business laser printers.

    3) Running costs-here I am talking about the printer consumables. laser printers use not ink they use tones. They actually have much in common with photocopiers in the way they work.

At first glance looks like a personal laser printer cheaper machine to run.It is a fallacy.Even if toner cartridges are more costly for business, laser printers, you need to take into account the cartridge sizes and capacities; you can see, because personal laser printers are designed for low consumption, they have less toner cartridges in relation to industry laser printers, and so cheaper to buy.

There are some other long-term consumable costs for items such as the fuser units and transfer belts. However, when you are looking to buy a printer and read reviews, look for it ‘ per page printing cost ‘ as this number will take account of all costs that are consumed.

    4) First Print not hour (FPOT)-If your printer will be busy, so is an important consideration. When the computer sends data to your printer, the printer to prepare for a new job-which takes time (5 to 45 seconds). This is because a laser printer needs for the entire job in memory before printing. Moreover, the time it takes to actually print the document.

You also can have a warm-up period to get the fuser to operating temperature, especially so, if the printer is in the standby mode. Typical war-up times are 30 to 90 seconds. you must take into account all these times and their impact on overall productivity.

What this all read down to is a printer is a tool, and you should use the right tool for the job. If you are in business, is anything other than a company laser printer is presumed to be a false economy in the long term.
